Labour MP for Hastings Michael Foster gives an insight into a 4th. term Labour Government. Labour MP for Hastings Michael Foster gave an insight into a 4th. term Labour Government under the main themes of Economic Competence, Improvements in Health and Education, and a solid record of reducing crime. He began by charting the progress made over the last 3 terms. Labour is the party of the strong economy, the party of the NHS and the party of opportunity for all. In addition Labour had tackled crime and achieved significant reductions in most areas, although the fear of crime remained high. But what of the future, where much remains to be done and which, if one believes the tabloid press, is bleak indeed? 'Let's not forget' he said, 'that the latest IMF forecast still predicts growth of 1.6% in the British economy, higher than our continental neighbours.' This will enable us to safeguard living standards and at the same time continue our investment in public services; to make access to healthcare more personal; to bring all schools up to the best standards and to ensure targets for eradicating childhood poverty are met. A 4th. term Labour government will work towards giving every citizen easier access to public services in a strengthened social partnership. This has to be done by a combination of openness in Whitehall and a more inclusive service at the local level. Crime in East Sussex is down by 27% and police numbers at their highest ever. Every parent of pre-school children has access to a Sure Start Centre covering all Children's Services. Mr Foster added: 'This will be a Britain capable of withstanding the shocks of the global economic downturn while at the same time building on the advances achieved over the last 3 terms in Health, Education and the elimination of Child Poverty.' This inspiring talk gave rise to a vigorous question and answer session. His audience left determined to campaign hard for a renewed 4th. term Labour mandate both now and whenever the next General Election is called.

GREENS CONDEMN BROWN NOT GREEN BUDGET FOR EASTBOURNE. Eastbourne Green Party has condemned Alastair Darlings first Budget announced last week as emphatically not a 'green' budget which considers the needs of Eastbourne. Although attempting to grab headlines with the new 'showroom tax' on 4x4 vehicles, Eastbourne Greens have highlighted a number of key areas the Chancellor failed to move towards a sustainable Green economy. These include: *Failing to increase fuel duty, so continuing Government policy of ignoring the fact that we are near the peak of global oil supplies. If present levels of oil consumption carry on rising, remaining oil reserves will be rapidly used up and oil prices to continue soar. Greens would have increased petrol prices to encourage conservation and to persuade people to use more public transport - critical in Eastbourne's Air Quality Management. *Presided over cuts in the DEFRA budget which mean agricultural support services and flood and coastal protection are all under serious constraints, which is bad news for Eastbournes heritage coastline and the entire South Downs. * Whilst raising the Government target of reducing greenhouse gases from 60% to 80% of 1990 levels by2050, the Chancellor emphasised his enthusiasm for airport expansion which is vigorously opposed by reident's affected by the expansion at Lydd, Manston, Gatwick and Heathrow. Greens believe permitting airport expansion and more cheap flying will further damage Eastbourne's domestic tourism business and is in direct contradiction to the Governments supposed climate policies. * The Chancellor ignored the need to make existing homes and buildings carbon free as soon as possible. Grants, incentives and regulations should not just be about new carbon free homes by 2016 or carbon free new buildings of all types by 2019. In order to cut emissions from housing by 80% by 2050, Greens want to see the installation of low and zero carbon emissions technologies in housing rise 15-fold from its present abysmal level to at least 600,000 such installations per year. Eastbourne Green Party constituency coordinator Leslie Dalton said "The Chancellor and Prime Minister attend climate change conferences around the world and make vacuous pledges in these vital issues which they fail time and time again to take action on at home. They know what needs to be done from the mountains of scientific evidence available, but simply do not have the guts to go Green. A few sound-bites on plastic bags show exactly how superficial this Governments green credentials are."

LOCAL MP CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO END DISABILITY POVERTY. Nigel Waterson MP is backing a new campaign to make tackling disability poverty a top government priority. The MP for Eastbourne has backed a Parliamentary motion supporting a new report from Leonard Cheshire Disability which found that disabled people are twice as likely to live in poverty as non-disabled people. The report, 'Disability poverty in the UK', also found that on average disabled people's basic day-to-day living costs are a quarter (25%) higher than those of non-disabled people, because of extra expense on essentials such as mobility aids, care and transport. Mr. Waterson said: "Leonard Cheshire Disability's report highlights the extent of the links between disability and poverty - I believe that more must be done to break those links." "Many disabled people can face additional costs, which can leave those on low incomes having to take impossible decisions about whether they pay utility bills or pay for their care, or pay for food or essential mobility equipment." "I know from speaking to disabled people and their families in Eastbourne and Willingdon that this is an important issue. It simply can't be right that disabled people are twice as likely to live in poverty as non-disabled people, which is why I'm backing this campaign."

POST OFFICE CAMPAIGN BUILDS. Local MP Nigel Waterson is leading the campaign to save local post offices threatened with closure. Nigel said today: "I am impressed by the massive reaction of my constituents faced with the closure of their local post office. There is real anger out there; and I have been overwhelmed by letters and emails." "It is absolutely absurd that these are post offices which are heavily used, which people want to continue to use, and which for the most part the postmasters and postmistresses want to keep running. Why on earth then does the Post Office want to close them?" "We already have Petitions in the Willingdon, Marine Parade and Broadway post offices. I do hope local residents will give their full support. We will fight very hard to remove the threat from these valued community assets."

MP PROBES COUNCIL PAY-OFF. Local MP Nigel Waterson is asking the District Auditor to investigate Eastbourne Borough Council's pay-off to former finance chief Bruce Bird. In his letter to the District Auditor, Mr Waterson says that he has heard from a number of constituents who are concerned about the matter. "I am asking the District Auditor to carry out a full investigation into the reported additional pension payment of £105,000 to Mr Bird. I am concerned that this has been agreed behind closed doors and before the independent financial investigation into the council's affairs has even been completed." "This is all too reminiscent of the large severance packages paid to chief executives at the DGH in recent years, and needs to be looked into. This is after all council taxpayers' money." "If the recent public comments by the Leader of the council about inheriting a "financial shambles" are true, then why is Mr Bird receiving an early retirement package instead of facing a disciplinary tribunal? Or now that it has come to light that at the end of the financial year the council had an underspend of £2 million, perhaps it is politically convenient to pay Mr. Bird off before the tribunal?" "These are serious questions which need serious answers and that is why I am raising them with the District Auditor."
