Meads

Barry Taylor ELECTED 2407 votes Conservative Party.
Since being elected in 1992 with the support of my wife Christine and our four children, all of whom still live and work in Eastbourne, we have been blessed with eight grandchildren of whom we are very proud.
Meads has always been a very special and pleasant place to live and I have, and always will endeavour to keep it that way. With all the effort the Conservative party are making to boost the economy of Eastbourne, increase the safety of residents and limit over development and over parking in our streets, all of us should feel well supported by them in our mutual aim of keeping Meads as it is, the place we love to live.

Dave Elkin ELECTED 2387 votes Conservative Party.
Dave has been a Borough Councillor for almost 10 years, serving the Devonshire ward, and later Meads. Dave has lived in Eastbourne since 1991, and has been a local hotelier since then, until selling his business last year.
Dave is currently Deputy Leader of the Council, and has a particular passion for our wonderful seafront. In his role as head of Tourism, he has overseen the development of the prestigious tennis tournament, Airbourne and other events, as well as investing in keeping the quality of the seafront high.
Dave, who is also a County Councillor, loves our town, and if elected, looks forward to continuing to serve as Meads Councillor in the future.

Nigel Goodyear ELECTED 2329 votes Conservative Party.
Nigel Goodyear (53) has lived in Eastbourne for eight years. He was a police officer in Australia and England until April 2006 and now works in government service. He is involved in local sports as a player and committee member.
He strongly believes in the overall preservation of Meads' unique character as a vital asset for the town. He supports planned improvements to the Saffrons sports ground and the creation of first class facilities at both the Devonshire Park Centre and the new Cultural Centre. After spending many years in public service he looks forward to serving the residents of Meads and Eastbourne on the Council.

Harry Boys 375 votes Green Party.
I have lived in Eastbourne since 1996 and trained at the School of Herbal Medicine (Phytotherapy) in Tunbridge Wells, practicing since 1987 as a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists . With my wife Sally, I have run the Eastbourne Clinic of Natural Medicine in Meads for 11 years.
I have been a member of the Green Party since the mid-1970's, when it was called the Ecology Party. While I have been delighted to see the green agenda become much more high-profile in recent years, I am still amazed and disappointed on how little successive Councils have done here in Eastbourne. Our domestic recycling rate is still only 18% - compared to almost 30% in neighbouring Wealden.
I strongly oppose the building of the proposed waste incinerator in Newhaven - which could have serious effects in the long-term health of Eastbourne residents - and want the Council to have much stronger powers to turn down the sighting of phone masts near densely populated areas.

Dennis Scard 220 votes Labour Party.
I live in Meads and I was formerly General Secretary of the Musicians' Union. I am Chairman of Shoreham Port Authority, a lay panel member of the Employment Tribunal service, a member of the DTI's Central Arbitration Committee, and on the governing bodies of several educational/arts organisations.
I am committed to retaining a full range of services at the DGH, a parking scheme which will benefit all residents and visitors to Eastbourne, a comprehensive home collection recycling service, improved public transport and regeneration of the town which protects its historic past and provides additional jobs and affordable housing for the younger generation.

Kate Arnold 457 votes Green Party.
Having lived in some of the most polluted cities in the world with no environmental infrastructures, coming back to England made me more aware of our responsibility to raise peoples awareness and keep that awareness at the forefront of all political arenas. This responsibility starts on our doorstep and with our local council. The prosperity and future of our town depends on looking after our natural environment - the reason so many people choose to live or visit here.
Working as a nutritionist in Eastbourne, I am also passionate about keeping the food we eat free from all the harmful additives and preservatives so many of them contain. Organic GM-free locally grown produce needs to be promoted here and I want to see a regular Farmers Market established in our town.

Dorothy Forsyth 299 votes Green Party.
I am a retired social worker specializing in care for elderly and physically handicapped people. Before moving to Meads, I was Chair of Camden Green party in North London, and candidate in the London Borough Council elections.
As a pensioner, I am especially interested in issues that effect older people, including pensions, local public transport, health services and a variety of environmental issues. The Green Party wants to see a secure foundation for retirement based on the notion of citizenship. Our Citizen's Pension would provide a basic, weekly pension, guaranteed for all, free from means-testing and rising in line with average earnings. Independent studies by the National Association of Pension Funds have shown that a Citizen's Pension could be afforded today within current net expenditure on state pensions.
I want to see real improvements to local public transport services so that older people can get around and remain active in the local community. Our free bus pass will be no good if Eastbourne Buses continue to reduce routes and services.

Jean Fisher 692 votes Liberal Democrat.
Meads resident Jean Fisher, a lecturer at Sussex Downs College has lived in Eastbourne for the past 30 years.
As a keen environmentalist, Jean is keen to ensure that Eastbourne is not over developed and that future planning decisions protect our green spaces. She is opposed to the proposed changes that could move vital services such as maternity and A&E away from our local hospital and to Hastings and supports the "Save the DGH" campaign.
Jean is critical of the plans to introduce a "Pay to Park" scheme in Eastbourne and sees this very much as a "stealth tax" to be imposed upon local Council Taxpayers. As she said "at a cost of more than £700, 000 to introduce it will not even be cost effective for many years!" Jean is also appalled by the decision of Conservative Councillors to award themselves a massive pay increase and pledges to vote to reverse this decision if elected.

Brendan Creaven 681 votes Liberal Democrat.
Brendan Creaven has lived in Eastbourne for 17 years and has been a Councillor in Old Town. He has lived and worked in many parts of the UK and West Africa with Unilever, Smith & Nephew and latterly running his own business in plastics.
He is dismayed at the proposed rise in Councillor Allowances and the slow progress of recycling. He is firmly opposed to the continuation of the 'put rubbish in a hole in the ground' mentality and is looking to local power generation.
Brendan works for the Driving Standards Agency besides taking an active role in the Eastbourne Seniors Club, the Liberal Democrats and Cancer support groups.
He wants more business attracted to the town with better employment opportunities for the young. He feels money is wasted by the Council and that petty crime which so dismays old and young could be cut.

Margaret Ticehurst 729 votes Liberal Democrat.
Margaret Ticehurst is an ex-Banker fully engaged in voluntary work. She spent her childhood abroad and has travelled extensively.
She Chairs the Cancer Service Users Group of the East Sussex NHS Trust and the Sussex Cancer Network Partnership Group.
She is a Trustee of the Eastbourne Seniors Club and Director of the apartment building in Meads where she has lived for 21 years.
Margaret is a member of the European Movement and a senior activist with the Liberal Democrats both locally and nationally.
Margaret declares that Eastbourne is a wonderful place which needs strong representation to bring new opportunities. However that does not mean that Councillors should receive a higher than inflation pay rise!
If elected she would work to get the practicalities of recycling sorted and an emphasis on green planning, with zero tolerance to petty crime such as litter, graffiti and drunkeness. Her interests are yoga, swimming, rain forests, good food and drink.
